Sanja Musić Milanović is a Croatian epidemiologist, university professor, and dedicated public health advocate who has served as the First Lady of Croatia since 19 February 2020, following the inauguration of her husband, President Zoran Milanović. Renowned for her contributions to health promotion and non-communicable disease prevention, she has become a leading voice for healthy living and equitable health education in Croatia.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1969 in Zagreb, within the former Socialist Republic of Croatia under Yugoslavia, Sanja Musić was raised in a working-class family with strong ties to the Dalmatian hinterland and Herzegovina. Her father, Ivan Musić, hailed from Lišane Ostrovičke near Zadar and worked in the construction sector. Her mother, Ana Matić, came from Broćanac near Neum in Herzegovina and was employed as a bookkeeper. Sanja grew up alongside her brother, Tomislav, in a supportive environment that valued education and community.
She completed her elementary and high school education in Zagreb, demonstrating early interest in the medical sciences. She pursued her higher education at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, where she earned her medical degree. Driven by an ambition to improve public health systems, she undertook postgraduate studies in Belgium, receiving a master’s degree in public health methodology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her academic journey culminated in a doctoral degree at the University of Zagreb, where she focused her thesis on the demographic, behavioral, and socio-economic determinants of adult obesity in Croatia.

She has been an active participant in international forums and collaborations, working with global organizations such as the World Health Organization to advance regional public health objectives. Her work bridges academia, policy development, and community engagement, making her a prominent figure in Croatia’s efforts to improve population health outcomes.
Role as First Lady of Croatia
Since becoming First Lady in 2020, Sanja Musić Milanović has redefined the role by integrating her professional expertise into her public service. She is a rare example of a First Lady who holds a significant academic and leadership position independent of her husband’s political role. Rather than focusing solely on ceremonial duties, she has used her platform to advocate for national health literacy, disease prevention, and wellness education.
Through media campaigns, educational programs, and direct outreach, she has championed the importance of healthy lifestyles—emphasizing balanced nutrition, physical exercise, and mental health care. She frequently visits schools, hospitals, and public health institutions, engaging with students, teachers, and healthcare professionals to reinforce her message. As a result, she has earned public respect not only for her role as First Lady but also for her identity as a scientist and educator.
She has spoken openly about the health challenges Croatia faces, including rising obesity rates and socio-economic disparities in health outcomes. Her leadership in these areas is widely recognized as having a real and lasting impact on both policy and public awareness.
Personal Life
Sanja met Zoran Milanović in 1991 at a New Year’s Eve celebration, and the couple married in 1994. They have two sons: Ante Jakov and Marko. Despite her husband’s prominent political career, including his tenure as Prime Minister and later President of Croatia, Sanja Musić Milanović has remained deeply committed to her own professional pursuits and maintains a clear, independent voice in both academic and civic arenas.
She is known publicly for her intelligence, composure, and dedication to societal well-being. Her ability to balance the demands of her public duties, academic responsibilities, and personal life has made her an admired figure within Croatia and beyond. Through her actions and advocacy, she continues to challenge traditional expectations of the First Lady’s role and exemplifies a modern, active, and impactful model of public service.
