Hereditary Princess Sophie

Sophie, Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein, Countess of Rietberg, is a prominent figure within European royalty, known both for her aristocratic lineage and her active role in social welfare initiatives in Liechtenstein. Born on 28 October 1967 as Sophie Elisabeth Marie Gabrielle Herzogin in Bayern, she was a member of the House of Wittelsbach and is recognized by the Jacobite movement as second in line for its symbolic succession. Through her marriage to Alois, Hereditary Prince and current Regent of Liechtenstein, she stands as the future sovereign consort of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Early Life and Education
Born in Munich, Germany, Sophie is the eldest of five daughters of Prince Max, Duke in Bavaria, and Princess Elisabeth, Duchess in Bavaria (née Countess Douglas). Her ancestry ties her directly to the last King of Bavaria, Ludwig III, as a patrilineal great-great-granddaughter. Baptised at her family’s home in Kreuth, she was raised in Wildbad Kreuth and educated at several prestigious institutions including the Girls’ Home Primary School of the English Lady, the Girls’ Secondary Boarding School Hohenburg, and the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, where she studied history and English literature. She also pursued studies at the Inchbald School of Design in London, a reflection of her artistic and cultural interests.

Marriage and Family
Sophie met Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, at a cousin’s birthday party, and the couple married on 3 July 1993 at the Cathedral of St. Florin in Vaduz. After living in London early in their marriage, they returned to Liechtenstein where they have raised four children:

  • Prince Joseph Wenzel Maximilian Maria of Liechtenstein, born 24 May 1995

  • Princess Marie Caroline Elisabeth Immaculata of Liechtenstein, born 17 October 1996

  • Prince Georg Antonius Constantin Maria of Liechtenstein, born 20 April 1999

  • Prince Nikolaus Sebastian Alexander Maria of Liechtenstein, born 6 December 2000

Sophie became a naturalized citizen of Liechtenstein upon her marriage. Despite a diagnosis of a benign brain tumor in 2003, she has since made a full recovery and continued her public duties with strength and devotion.

Role as First Lady
As Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein, Sophie has become a cornerstone of the principality’s philanthropic and social service landscape. She is especially focused on initiatives that support women, children, and families. In 2006, she founded the Sophie von Liechtenstein Foundation for Woman and Child, which supports women experiencing unplanned pregnancies, offering counseling and social services through offices in Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland. The Princess also initiated schwanger.li, a pregnancy counseling service, and helped launch the Liechtenstein Family Network to support families with young children.

Her commitment to public service extends to numerous patronages, including the Liechtenstein Red Cross, which she has presided over since 2015. Under her leadership, the organization contributed significantly to Ukraine relief efforts. She is also the patron of the Liechtenstein Animal Welfare Association, Caritas Liechtenstein, and the Heilpädagogische Zentrum (Special Education Center). Her presence is regularly seen at social institutions, events, and international diplomatic engagements, where she represents the principality alongside her husband.

Titles and Honours
Sophie has held the style Her Royal Highness since birth, first as Princess Sophie of Bavaria and then as Duchess in Bavaria following her father’s succession to that title. Upon marriage, she became Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein and Countess of Rietberg, titles she retains with full royal styling.
