Diana Nausėdienė
Diana Nausėdienė is a Lithuanian business manager, academic, and public figure who has served as the First Lady of Lithuania since 12 July 2019, following the inauguration of her husband, Gitanas Nausėda, as President of the Republic. Known for her emphasis on education, traditional values, and the importance of national identity, she has become a central figure in Lithuania’s civic and social life.
Early Life and Education
Diana Nausėdienė was born in the port city of Klaipėda, then part of the Lithuanian SSR in the Soviet Union. Raised in a traditional Lithuanian household, her family background reflects a mix of maritime discipline and professional pragmatism—her father captained a long-distance fishing vessel, while her mother worked as an accountant. Diana has one sister, who is three years older.
In 1987, she earned her degree from the Faculty of Light Industry at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, known today as Kaunas University of Technology. Her academic path aligned with her later professional work, which focused on international trade, quality assurance, and business development.
Career
Nausėdienė’s professional experience includes time at H&M Hennes & Mauritz GBC AB, where she specialized in quality management and standards maintenance. Her global exposure and business acumen informed her transition into academia. She later became a lecturer at the Vilnius University International Business School, where she engaged with students on topics related to international commerce and business ethics.
Role as First Lady
As First Lady, Diana Nausėdienė has taken a visible and sometimes vocal role in Lithuanian society. She is known for supporting initiatives related to education, national identity, family policy, and women’s roles in leadership. She frequently appears at civic events, charity drives, and state functions, both domestically and abroad.
Her tenure has not been without controversy. At a 2020 conference on women’s leadership, she commented that increasing the number of women in a given field—using education as an example—does not inherently improve outcomes. This sparked public debate, with critics accusing her of undermining efforts toward gender equality in Lithuania’s education system. Despite this, she remains an active participant in public discourse and a consistent presence beside the president at national and international events.
Honours
Diana Nausėdienė has received prestigious honors from foreign states in recognition of her diplomatic role and contributions to Lithuania’s bilateral relations:
-
Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown (Belgium, 24 October 2022)
-
Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (Poland, 5 July 2023)
Public Image and Influence
Though not without critics, Nausėdienė is widely regarded as a thoughtful and assertive First Lady. She is particularly known for her support of Lithuanian cultural heritage and her consistent promotion of social responsibility through education and community service. Her speeches and public commentary often reflect her belief in the importance of upholding traditional values while navigating modern challenges.
