Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed
Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed is an Iraqi-Kurdish politician, humanitarian, and the current First Lady of Iraq as the wife of President Abdul Latif Rashid. She is a prominent member of one of Iraqi Kurdistan’s most influential political families and is known for her work in humanitarian efforts, media, and cultural preservation. Her lineage, political engagement, and long-standing commitment to Kurdish causes have made her a significant public figure within Iraq and the Kurdish diaspora.
Family and Background
Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed was born in the Sabonkaran neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah, a historically significant and culturally rich city in the Kurdish region of Iraq. She is the daughter of Ibrahim Ahmed, a distinguished Kurdish judge, writer, and political leader, and Galawezh Salh Fatah, a novelist and cultural figure. Shanaz is the third of eight children in a politically active household. Her family has deep roots in the Kurdish struggle for autonomy and self-determination. Her sister, Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, also served as First Lady of Iraq during the presidency of Jalal Talabani, making the family one of the few in modern Iraq to have two siblings serve as First Ladies.
Early Life and Education
Shanaz’s early years were shaped by political upheaval and conflict. After the 1958 military coup in Iraq, her family relocated to Baghdad, where she began her education at Mamounia Elementary School. In 1962, they returned to Sulaymaniyah, but were frequently displaced due to her father’s political involvement. This included periods of refuge in the Zagros Mountains, as well as forced moves to Iran and later back to Baghdad. Despite the disruptions, Shanaz was determined to pursue her education. In 1972, she began science studies at Baghdad University, but political pressures led her to flee Iraq the following year.
Her exile took her to Cairo, Egypt, and then Beirut, Lebanon, where she attempted to study engineering. However, instability forced her return to the Zagros Mountains in 1974 to rejoin her family and the Kurdish resistance. In 1975, following the Algiers Agreement and subsequent collapse of the Kurdish movement in Iraq, her family sought refuge in Urmia, Iran, and then settled in Tehran. There, Shanaz enrolled in Pahlavi University (later renamed Tehran University) to study medicine.
Marriage and Exile
In 1976, Shanaz became engaged to Abdul Latif Rashid, who was then working as a hydraulic engineer in Saudi Arabia. Their engagement occurred against the backdrop of increasing repression. By 1977, facing the risk of arrest under a new accord between Iran and Iraq, Shanaz relocated to Damascus, Syria, where she resumed her medical studies. On 29 November 1977, she married Abdul Latif Rashid in Damascus. The couple moved to London the following year, where they raised two sons and one daughter while continuing their political and humanitarian work.
Political and Humanitarian Work
Though she did not participate directly in armed resistance like her sister Hero or her brother-in-law Jalal Talabani, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed became an indispensable part of the Kurdish movement from abroad. She was deeply involved in lobbying efforts, organizing rallies, fundraising, and raising international awareness of the plight of the Kurdish people under Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Following the Kurdish uprising of 1991 and the devastating sanctions on Iraq, Shanaz co-founded Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC), a humanitarian NGO dedicated to improving the lives of displaced and vulnerable children. KSC operates in camps and rural areas across the Kurdish region and northern Iraq, offering healthcare, education, food security, and psychosocial support. One of its most notable efforts is the establishment of a children’s activity center in the Arbat Camp near Sulaymaniyah, which shelters thousands of refugees, including many fleeing the Syrian Civil War.
Media and Cultural Preservation
Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed co-founded Kurdsat Broadcasting Corporation in January 2000, one of the first Kurdish-language satellite television channels, providing a platform for Kurdish voices in politics, culture, and society. In addition, she established the Ibrahim Ahmed Foundation to honor her father’s legacy through literary promotion and civic engagement.
Alongside her husband, Shanaz is an avid art collector and cultural preservationist. Their collection includes rare pieces of Iraqi and Kurdish traditional artwork. Many of these are on display in galleries such as the Zamwa Gallery and the Latif Rashid Gallery in Sulaymaniyah. She also leads efforts to restore Ottoman-era sites and preserve historical architecture across Iraqi Kurdistan, particularly in Sulaymaniyah and surrounding regions.
Role as First Lady
As First Lady of Iraq since Abdul Latif Rashid’s assumption of the presidency in October 2022, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed has focused on humanitarian advocacy, women’s empowerment, children’s rights, and cultural heritage. She brings decades of experience in both grassroots activism and elite political circles to her current role. Her work continues to bridge the historical legacy of Kurdish resistance with the modern aspirations of a united, peaceful, and democratic Iraq.
