Arya Ali
Arya Ali is the First Lady of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, serving since August 2, 2020, as the wife of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. She is the youngest First Lady in the nation’s history and has emerged as a passionate advocate for social equity, environmental restoration, women’s empowerment, and youth development. Her initiatives reflect a strong commitment to national progress and community-centered leadership.
Early Life and Education
Arya Ali (née Chandrabhan) was born and raised in Lusignan and Ogle, two villages on the East Coast of Demerara, Guyana. Her father, Kishore, owned a lumberyard, while her mother, Parvattie, worked as a cook. Arya lost her father at the age of nine, an experience that shaped much of her early resilience and sense of responsibility. She often describes her childhood with warmth and nostalgia, recalling days spent climbing fruit trees and playing around her father’s business.
She attended Sacred Heart Primary School and later went on to St. Joseph High School. Following her secondary education, she enrolled at the University of Guyana, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies. Committed to lifelong learning, Arya Ali is currently pursuing an International Master’s of Business Administration at the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.
Professional Career
Prior to becoming First Lady, Arya Ali worked for eight years at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). During her tenure at the GRA, she held various roles and gained practical experience in public administration and financial oversight. Her background in economics and development has deeply influenced her approach to public service, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive growth.
Role as First Lady
As First Lady, Arya Ali has initiated and led several impactful national programs focused on improving the quality of life for all Guyanese, particularly vulnerable populations.
Menstrual Hygiene Initiative
One of her flagship programs is the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative, launched in 2021 to address period poverty. The program distributes free sanitary products to over 32,000 school-aged girls across the country. It aims to ensure that no girl misses school due to lack of access to sanitary products. The program has since expanded to include vulnerable women, with a long-term vision of making Guyana the first country in Latin America to offer free sanitary products to all women and girls.
Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative
Launched in June 2021, the Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative aims to improve living conditions and provide better opportunities for children in institutional care. To date, the initiative supports approximately 300 children across nine orphanages, with expansion underway. It focuses on providing essential supplies, education support, and emotional well-being services to orphaned children.
National Beautification Project
Arya Ali also launched the National Beautification Project to restore and beautify public spaces throughout Guyana. A key component of this project is the rehabilitation of the Kingston Seawall, transforming it into a safe and vibrant recreational zone. The initiative reflects her broader commitment to creating sustainable and community-friendly urban environments.
International Engagement and Advocacy
Arya Ali has become an active voice for Guyana on the international stage. She has participated in global forums focused on gender equality, sustainable development, and youth empowerment. In 2022, she addressed the One Young World Summit in Manchester, sharing the stage with global leaders and influencers. Her presentations often emphasize the importance of inclusive education, gender parity, and strong institutions.
Awards and Recognition
In September 2024, Arya Ali was honored with the Global Female Impact Leadership Award at the Global Power Women Conference held at the City University of New York. The award recognized her leadership in advancing the rights of women and girls, particularly through the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative and her broader advocacy efforts.
Personal Life
Arya Ali is married to Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Guyana’s ninth Executive President. The couple has one son, Zayd, born in 2017. Despite her demanding public role, she prioritizes her family and is deeply engaged in balancing her responsibilities as a mother, wife, and national figure.
Through her determined leadership, inclusive policies, and grassroots initiatives, Arya Ali continues to redefine the role of First Lady in Guyana. Her impact resonates both nationally and internationally, making her a key figure in shaping Guyana’s modern social landscape.
