Introduction

As the wife of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Dr. Pich Chanmony serves as the First Lady of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Since Hun Manet became Prime Minister in August 2023, she has emerged as an increasingly prominent figure in Cambodian public life, combining diplomatic representation with an extensive commitment to humanitarian and public-health work.

A trained pharmacist and public-health specialist, Pich Chanmony has an unusually strong academic background for a political spouse. She holds a pharmacy degree from Cambodia’s University of Health Sciences, a Master of Public Health from Boston University, and a Doctorate in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Her public service has centered on healthcare, youth development, women’s welfare, education, and humanitarian assistance. Through her leadership in several Cambodian charitable and social organizations, she has developed a public identity rooted in service and community wellbeing.

Official Title: First Lady of the Kingdom of Cambodia

As the spouse of the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Pich Chanmony serves as the country’s First Lady. Cambodia does not have a constitutionally established office of First Lady; the position is instead an informal public and ceremonial role associated with the Prime Minister’s spouse.

She accompanies the Prime Minister at official events, represents Cambodia at humanitarian and diplomatic engagements, and supports initiatives addressing health, education, women and children’s welfare, and community development.

Early Life

Pich Chanmony was born in Phnom Penh in 1980.

She pursued a career in healthcare and public health, beginning with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Health Sciences in Cambodia. She subsequently studied public health in the United States and the United Kingdom, earning a Master of Public Health from Boston University and a Doctorate in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Her doctoral research focused on community-based approaches to tuberculosis treatment in Cambodia, reflecting her longstanding interest in improving healthcare at the community level.

Family Life

Pich Chanmony married Hun Manet in 2006, and the couple have three children.

Despite their prominent political position, the family has generally maintained a degree of privacy. Her role as a mother has nevertheless remained an important part of her public identity, particularly through her advocacy for children, families, education, and youth development.

Becoming First Lady

On 22 August 2023, Hun Manet became Prime Minister of Cambodia following the transition of leadership from his father, longtime Prime Minister Hun Sen. Pich Chanmony consequently became Cambodia’s First Lady.

Her arrival in the role represented a generational transition within Cambodia’s political leadership. Rather than simply adopting a ceremonial position, she brought an established background in public health and humanitarian work to the First Ladyship.

Public Role

Pich Chanmony holds several prominent humanitarian positions, including Permanent Vice President of the Cambodian Red Cross and leadership roles in organizations supporting youth, women, education, healthcare, and families.

Her public engagements frequently take her beyond Phnom Penh and into communities affected by poverty, illness, bereavement, and other social challenges. In January 2025, for example, she visited the family of a fallen Cambodian soldier and provided humanitarian assistance.

In 2026, she has continued to emphasize education and youth development. At Cambodia’s Study Skills and Careers Expo 2026, she highlighted the importance of young people developing skills that correspond to the country’s changing economic and social needs.

A Symbol of Health and Humanitarian Service

Pich Chanmony’s background distinguishes her from many First Ladies around the world.

Rather than entering public life solely through marriage to a political leader, she developed a professional identity in pharmacy and public health before becoming First Lady. Her humanitarian activities have therefore become closely connected to her academic and professional experience.

Her advocacy for healthcare, women, youth, education, and family welfare has given the Cambodian First Ladyship a distinctly community-oriented character.

Legacy in Progress

Pich Chanmony is still at the beginning of her tenure as First Lady, but she has already established a recognizable public identity centered on health, education, humanitarian service, and the empowerment of Cambodia’s younger generation.

As Cambodia enters a new generation of political leadership, she represents a First Ladyship that combines traditional ceremonial responsibilities with a professional commitment to public health and social development. Through her humanitarian work and growing international visibility, Dr. Pich Chanmony is becoming an important representative of modern Cambodia and its aspirations for a healthier, more educated, and more resilient society.
