Doris Schmidauer

Doris Schmidauer (born 21 September 1963) is an Austrian political scientist, environmental advocate, and the First Lady of Austria since 26 January 2017, as the spouse of President Alexander Van der Bellen. She is widely respected for her work in environmental policy, gender equality, and civic participation, often describing herself as Austria’s “First Volunteer” rather than “First Lady.”

Early Life and Education

Doris Schmidauer was born in Grieskirchen, Upper Austria, and grew up in the town of Peuerbach. Her father, Ernst Schmidauer, was a school director and a conductor of the local brass band. After completing her primary education in Peuerbach, she attended a girls’ high school in Wels, graduating in 1982.

She later moved to Vienna to study political science and sociology at the University of Vienna. In 1988, she completed her degree with a thesis on the historical development of Austrian nitrogen production. During her university years, she became active in environmental causes and participated in the pivotal Hainburger Au protest, a mass environmental demonstration that helped establish one of Austria’s most significant nature reserves.

Political and Professional Career

Doris Schmidauer began her professional career in politics in 1989 when she joined the Austrian Green Party. She served as a close aide to Alexander Van der Bellen during his leadership of the party, working as his assistant and political advisor. In 1999, she was appointed Managing Director of the Green Party Parliamentary Club, where she remained for nearly two decades. Her work in this position included managing legislative coordination and overseeing human resources for the parliamentary group.

In 2018, she transitioned into the role of self-employed management consultant, although she has kept a low public profile in that capacity.

Role as First Lady

As First Lady, Schmidauer has approached the role with humility and purpose, often choosing to highlight social causes over ceremonial appearances. She actively supports initiatives focused on environmental sustainability, youth engagement, women’s empowerment, and social inclusion. Her approach emphasizes volunteerism and active citizenship, aligning with her long-standing values and background in civil society work.

She is also a published author. In 2025, she released a book co-written with journalist Nina Horaczek, titled Land der Töchter – zukunftsreich. The book blends personal reflections with portraits of notable Austrian women, aiming to inspire intergenerational dialogue and broader recognition of women’s contributions to society.

Personal Life

Doris Schmidauer married Alexander Van der Bellen in December 2015, following many years of partnership. The couple lives in Vienna and continues to champion progressive causes. Despite the visibility of her public role, she maintains a down-to-earth presence, focused on service, not status.

Honours and Awards

As First Lady, Schmidauer has been the recipient of numerous foreign state honors, including:

  • Grand Crosses from Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Estonia

  • The Grand Gwanghwa Medal of South Korea

  • Multiple high-level diplomatic service awards in recognition of her international engagement and advocacy
